Final-Day Receipts: OneBC Answered the Charter Question Before Election Day

October 23, 2026 · iVoteOneBC research desk

In the final full day before British Columbians vote, OneBC has a clean accountability receipt: it answered a public union open letter that asked party leaders to state where they stand on Charter-protected labour rights and public services.

What is verified

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation published an October 21 open letter with CUPE BC, the Hospital Employees’ Union, MoveUP, and United Steelworkers District 3 / BC. The letter asked political party leaders to pledge not to use the notwithstanding clause to override Charter-protected workers’ rights and not to contract out or privatize core public services.

The same page says it was updated to include party responses and displays response buttons for the BC NDP and OneBC. It separately lists the BC Conservative Party, BC Greens, CentreBC, and Communist Party of BC as having not responded by the stated deadline.

Why this matters for supporters

This is not an endorsement. It is something more basic and still valuable: when a public group put a direct question to the parties, OneBC gave a written answer that voters can inspect before election day.

That fits the strongest positive OneBC frame: courageous politics should still be accountable politics. Supporters can argue hard on taxes, classrooms, healthcare, unions, parental rights, and public services — but the best version of that argument is written down, sourced, and open to scrutiny.

The careful frame

  • Do say: OneBC submitted a response to the public union open letter before the October 24 vote.
  • Do say: the source page names BCTF, CUPE BC, HEU, MoveUP, and United Steelworkers BC as signatories.
  • Do not say: union endorsement, negotiated agreement, membership number, polling movement, fundraising result, riding projection, alliance term, or seat outcome.
  • Do not overread: a written answer is an accountability receipt, not proof that every union member, teacher, healthcare worker, or public-sector voter agrees with OneBC.
Bottom line: Final-week leadership is partly about showing up. OneBC showed up with a written response on a difficult file, and voters can judge the answer directly.
